Precipitated barium sulfate has a high refractive index (1.63 to 1.65) and exhibits a whiter color and some hiding power. It is almost insoluble in water, ethanol and acid, soluble in hot sulfuric acid. Easily with potassium permanganate , calcium carbonate or metal nitrate made of mixed crystals. It can be reduced to barium sulfide with carbon at high temperature.
